Congratulations Interislander!

Lightning Naval Architecture congratulates Interislander on 50 successful years sailing on Cook Strait.  The introduction of Aramoana in 1962 by NZ Railways brought the concept of Roll-on Roll-off freight to the Cook Strait and changed the nature of shipping in New Zealand.   Life on the Strait is not always plain sailing.  Behind the scenes Interislander and their partners work ceaselessly to ensure that the fleet of ships making the daily crossing provides a modern and efficient service.  LNA has worked closely with the Interislander team on more than 30 projects including structural engineering, interior design and refit management, ship lengthening, hydrodynamic modelling, implementation of SOLAS safety regulations, stability calculations and new ship concepts.  The partnership began in 2004 when Lightning Naval Architecture designed and managed a complete refurbishment of DEV Arahura.  2000 m² of passenger spaces were stripped and refitted in a hectic 4-week period, resulting in a dramatic transformation.

Many projects have been completed since then. Highlights have included

• 2008 Arahura upgrade with modifications designed by LNA to bring the ship up to date with the latest safety standards and improve profitability.

• 2010 MS Kaitaki investigations into fitting rail on the main deck of and related changes to the ship to shore facilities.  This project utilised structural design and calculation skills. Investigations were also required to enhance the ship’s trimming and heeling capacity to deal with loading heavy rakes of rail wagons.

• 2011 DEV Aratere lengthening.  This was a complex conversion project involving the installation of additional generator capacity, increased cargo capacity and new passenger accommodation.  LNA provided ship design elements, hydraulic calculations, marine interior design and managed the materials schedules.  LNA also had responsibility for compliance with SOLAS safety regulations including fire control.

• 2011 Ara9 - concept design for a new ferry to take the fleet forward into the future.   The LNA team worked closely with the owners to draw up an exciting and efficient design which meets their current and foreseeable needs. “Interislander have continually invested in and upgraded their fleet.  We are thrilled to be partnering the company as it moves forward into the next 50 years on the Strait”, says Hans Stevelt, Design Director of Lightning Naval Architecture.
