Jennifer Knox has been a pioneering force in merchant shipping since 1991. She was the first female Naval Architect to work at the Garden Island Naval Dockyard in Sydney and went onto be the first woman in Australia to establish a Naval Architectural Consultancy.
24 years later, her continuing achievements have now been recognised by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and she has been made a distinguished Fellow of the society. “A member who is considered to have achieved professional standing in the maritime community and has held positions of superior responsibility may be elected as a Fellow – the Institution’s highest class of membership.” says Trevor Blakeley, Chief Executive Officer of RINA; “In Australia there are just 68 Fellows and Ms. Knox is the only woman”.

Jennifer grew up in rural Queensland, over 200 miles away from the coast. She had never sailed before when a friend persuaded her to help bring a traditional Sarawak sailing vessel back from Borneo in the 1970’s. The adventure sparked a passion for the sea and after several more years sailing private yachts throughout the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia she returned to University to studying engineering and marine design at UNSW.
Her career since has spanned Australasia and Europe, including a period at a leading international design consultancy in the renowned maritime city of Copenhagen. With true entrepreneurial spirit she has spear-headed her own consultancy since 1998, operating it from a small island just off the coast of Sydney for many years. During this time, she and her team have specialised in complex conversions of container / cargo ships, deep sea research vessels and RoRo ferries. They have also delivered new building designs for commercial and private vessels.
